"Kitsch"

Kitsch is a German term roughly meaning "knock off" that has been used to categorize art that is considered an inferior copy of an existing style. The term is also used more loosely in referring to any art that is pretentious or in bad taste, and also commercially produced items that are considered trite or crass. Because the word was brought into use as a response to a large amount of a large amount of art in the 19th century where the aesthetic of art work was confused with a sense of exaggerated sentimentality or melodrama, kitsch is most closely associated with art that is sentimental, mawkish, or maudlin; however, it can be used to refer to any type of art which is deficient for similar reasons — whether it tries to appear sentimental, glamorous, theatrical, or creative

Sorry, a few days later than my co blogger! Kitsch: Or tacky old crap like this:

It is often said that kitsch relies on merely repeating convention and formula, lacking the sense of creativity and originality displayed in genuine art.

Great word, and with so much connected imagery it was hard to know what to draw...

P.s. Happy Birthday Wendy!

"Jalapeno"

Ja·la·pe·ño (häl-pny)n. pl. ja·la·pe·ños - A cultivar of the tropical pepper Capsicum annuum having a very pungent green or red fruit. The fruit of this plant.

I wanted to make a character out of the Jalapeno (because thats basically what I always do with my illustrations!) he started off more stereotypical and iconic, like something you might see on a cheap jar of peppers, but he's got a bit more character now. Like something you'd see on a slightly more expensive jar of pepppers....

I'm presuming its pretty hot not that i've ever had it, well try not to. I don't really do hot although I attempt to improve my heat tolerence from time to time with the help of buckets of yoghurt. Anyways here's my piccie.

"Aficionado"

Aficionado \uh-fish-ee-uh-NAH-doh\, noun: An enthusiastic admirer; a fan.

My version, done without looking at the entry below. Not sure where this idea came from, started off as two bottles of wine but got changed a bit. Nobody would ever know what the word is from the illustration, but I'm not too worried about that.

Ok, so we've had a break from words, we've been busy!

To have a slight twist with wordoverheard today we are both symaltaneously privately illustrating the same word to see how differently we both execute it. I'm reckoning Rex will choose to do a character which fits the bill perfectly so I've chosen to take the word from a different angle. So Aficionado means enthusiastic admirer or fan. Well, I am a fan of typography so, maybe its the easy option and perhaps a little obvious but this is what i've done:
